Pharmaceutical store Dis-Chem along with other companies that they have partnership with is offering free testing for Covid-19 to South Africans who can’t afford to pay for test.
The is at this time a national backlog on Covid-19 testing, as a result the Western cape government has now decided not to test people aged 55 or younger in the Cape Town metro if they show no signs or symptoms of the virus.
The head of the provincial department of Health in Western Cape, Dr Keith Cloete said, “That does mean that explicitly, we have had to make the call that if you are under the age of 55 and you don’t have comorbidities, that at this point in time, if you present yourself for testing we will be doing screening to you, if you’ve got symptoms please isolate yourselfassuming that you have Covid-19.”
Dis-Chem stores says it has partnered with the Solidarity Fund to offer free testing, of which people who wish to test first have to apply using one of these methods:
• Call the Doctor on call helpline on 087 055 0234 (weekdays from 08:00 to 17:00).
• Call Momentum’s Hello Doctor service on *120*394#.
• You can get a referral via the Discovery and Vodacom free Covid-19 consultations.
• Or you can get a referral from your family doctor (who may refer you via his or her Vula app).
Applicants can’t be members of medical scheme or be employed. Other criteria may include pensioners, disabled persons and orphans.
If your application is approved Dis-Chem will send SMS with a voucher which should be redeemed for testing purposes only, and directions to your nearest Dis-Chem store.
The test results will be available in three to five days which is just a week.
