International Day of the Midwife 2025 – Midwives: Critical in every crisis
The world is facing an unprecedented number of compounding crises-natural disasters, conflicts, and the ongoing impacts of climate change. These crises disproportionately affect women, girls, and gender diverse people, exposing them to heightened risks such as pregnancy complications and gender-based violence, while also limiting their access to essential health services. In these challenging times, midwives are critical. They are trusted first responders within their communities, who can prepare health systems to be ready for any crisis. They can provide up to 90% of sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, and adolescent health (SRMNAH) services, even during humanitarian crises. With minimal resources, midwives can:
- Provide safe births, antenatal, and postnatal care,
- Provide contraception, comprehensive abortion care, and care for survivors of gender-based violence,
- Support breastfeeding, ensuring newborns receive safe, clean, and reliable nutrition,
- Educate and prepare communities with the knowledge and tools they need to stay safe and healthy during emergencies.

Nurses on the frontline of the fight back
Are you a nurse or nursing associate? Join Public Services International at an event to mark International Nurses Day 2025 on Thursday 15 May 2025 13:00-15:30 CEST. Hear from nurses from around the world on how they are winning the fight for safe staffing, better working conditions, and patient safety.
Nurses continue to go above and beyond, putting patient care ahead of their own basic needs.
Burnout and stress have led to an exodus of nurses, record numbers are leaving the sector, further deepening the staffing crisis. It is estimated that as many as 13 million more nurses may be needed by 2030. To meet this figure governments and employers must take action to fix the workforce crisis by improving pay and conditions to match the rising cost of living, implementing workforce standards to ensure the safe delivery of care and investing properly in public systems of health and care.
Nurses’ unions are on the frontline of the fight, organising and campaigning for better pay and conditions for all nurses. This event is open to all PSI affiliates who represent nurses, nursing associates and nursing students.
